Sea Defence Repairs Location: Conway Centre - Anglesey Task: Sea Defence Repairs Project Overview: The Sea Defences surrounding the Outdoor Pursuits Activity Centre were in poor condition. Loose masonry and collapsed structures were beginning to cause hazards to the centre users and had the potential to close the facility down.
We were tasked with carrying out vegetation removal, concrete reinforcements, crack stitch repairs and NHL 5 Lime Mortar Re-Pointing of 320Sq.m of Sea Wall. Due to the tidal location of this project and the potential rescue implications when working down on the shoreline Rope Access was selected as the safest, most cost effective method to carry out the works. Our teams were able to install safety lines to pull tested EN795 Type A anchors to work at height along the high sea wall whilst the tide was out and a combination of Deadweight Anchor Systems used over the parapet walls.
Our team also carried out the repairs of several sections of concrete sea defences which involved fabricating shuttering and formwork to allow Fast Setting C50 Concrete to be poured. This was a difficult challenge for our teams which involved precise planning and working with tide times to ensure the Concrete cured effectively in the narrow window of availability whilst always considering the environmental factors of working on an open watercourse.
Several sections of underpinning were carried out to reinforce the sea wall in areas that wash out had appeared and blockwork was missing. This involved temporary propping and shoring to ensure the area was left in a safe manner for the centre users and our teams. With the amount of movement in the blockwork we installed a large amount of Helifix Crack Stitch repairs throughout the walls to tie in cracked sections.
The quick and easy set up of our systems allowed the centre to remain operational whilst running courses throughout the summer months as we could easily remove them when required.
