Boiler Decommissioning Location:Chorley Police Station
Task:
Decommission redundant boiler and flue system
Project Overview:
We were tasked with the removal of the redundant Boiler and Flue system located several floors below street level. Due to various elements of working at height and high levels of manual handling involved we provided our client Duck Mechanical and Electrical with a Safe, Cost Effective and Time Saving solution.
We combined a number of our services to get the works done. Using IPAF trained MEWP operatives we were able to remove the flue at high level as the use of the roof for Rope Access was not advisable due to it's fragile nature.
We then utilised our Rope Access team to continue with the removal of the flue sections down the 15m shaft to the plant room level. This phase of the works was rigged to rescue so in the event of any unforseen incident happening the Rope Tech could be safely retrieved from the location.
Inside the plant room the vast majority of the work was carried out at ground level. In order to break up the boiler which was made up of a cast iron Heat Exchanger element circa750kg we used our NVQ qualified Riggers lift it down from a height of 1.5m to ground level. This was carried out with the aid of a Portable Lifting Gantry and Chainblocks. All lifting operations were carried out using a task specific Lifting Plan produced by our Lifting Operations Appointed Person.
All pieces were disassembled into small enough sections in order to allow a rope hauling system to be connected in the shaft and allow for speedy removal to street level. This enabled us to do the works with minimal manual handling in a safe and controlled manner.
Our client was impresses at the speed and efficiency with which we were able to operate by using a multi skilled workforce.
